For this fourth piece in the Dimensions and Decade series, I chose old photo slides—those quintessential family vacation images that were so innovative for their time—and matchbook covers from a variety of businesses and casinos that represent moments and memories. The electrical components add texture and color. I like to take pieces from my old lithographs to bring in bold color and lines and incorporate elements of my own personal growth. Everything comes together to represent how time passes and how things change. Something can be innovative one moment and obsolete the next. As we watch things come and go, it makes us contemplate our own purpose and our own accomplishments.
I use the cityscape combined with parts of nature and color to represent the layers, the dimensions, and the decades that have passed and shaped who we are. Some days that journey can feel very intense, overwhelming, or unfair, and in the next breath it can be the most beautiful, profound moment. No matter what city you walk in, you can always feel a sense of history—a sense of dimension, layers, and decades that created the space you occupy in that moment.
What I love about the cityscape concept is that we can view it as our collective history or as a symbol of our own personal, individual journey. The flow shows that there is never a perfect moment, but rather an opportunity to see the love and divine order in any moment. In my work, I choose interpretations of cityscapes and landscapes because they encompass the concept of Oneness and the idea that we are all part of something bigger during our human incarnation. I believe that when we explore the macro version of what we have collectively created decade after decade, we see and feel the highs and lows of humanity—the duality of the experience based on one’s perception in any given moment.
For this piece, I choose to use consistent rectangular shapes and lines to create dimensions and space to provide a sense of lightness and momentum. I use color, composition, and texture to convey this concept. As the viewer, you’re invited to explore and connect with the portion of the piece that makes sense to you. Take time to look into the layers under the wax and view the various images underneath. Some parts of our journey require time and experience to gain knowledge and awareness, and in other cases, transformation of low energy can happen in a joyful moment. My wish for you is to have a mindful moment with this art that may provide you with some peace, reflection, and joy.
